loading text file in vector columns

i have a text file which is having 8 different colums. i want to load this text file and save the colums as vectors.
filename='111.txt';
a=importdata(filename)
it is giving error.
Error using importdata
Unable to open file.

May be no file "111.txt" exist in the current working directory.
Please check again & confirm?
exist('111.txt','file')
