Soft bits from a 256-QAM demodulator

Hi,
I need to obtain 3-bit soft values from a 256-QAM demodulator. Is it possible to make any changes to the already existing QAM demodulator in the @modem (comm) tool box? Or is there any existing implementation out there which I can use? The existing demodulator in the toolbox only accepts decision types of Hard-decision, LLR and approx. LLR.
