This primer develops the ideas behind wavelets and shows how they can be used as analytical tools for signal processing, numerical analysis, and mathematical modeling. Designed for engineers, scientists, and mathematicians with little or no prior experience with wavelets, this text presents a well-balanced blend of the mathematical theory underlying wavelet techniques and discusses theoretical and practical wavelet applications. The book develops both signal expansion and filter bank approaches, and contains an array of new generalizations of the basic wavelet system including M-band wavelets, biorthogonal systems, wavelet packets, and multiwavelets. Also included is an appendix of MATLAB programs.
