How to communicate between MATLAB and Simulink in external mode?

We use Simulink in external mode to control a Lego EV3 robot in real time. We would like to update the parameters that control the motor power in Simulink from a MATLAB script. How can we transfer the values from the MATLAB script to Simulink?
