latex interpreter seems to miss fonts

Hi all,
I am using matlab R2011a on a macbook pro (os X 10.6.8). Latex interpreter in xlabel and ylabel produces unexpected symbols even for simple formulas. For instance
xlabel('$\gamma$','interpreter','latex')
produces a ? enclosed in a black diamond. I found old (2005) bug fixes suggesting to manually install matlab's latex fonts. I did this, but nothing changed.
Can someone help me, please?
Thanks a lot
Francesco

Hi Oleg,
this was one of the workaround I was able to find.
I did as explained, but to no avail. Unfortunately, despite a lot of new cm fonts are now installed in my fontbook, the problem persists.
Thanks a lot anyway
