I have installed MATLAB for student and have now tried opening the application. When doing so I receive this message "You can’t use this version of the application “MATLAB_R2014a” with this version of OS X."

Are you using Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite?
MATLAB is not supported on Yosemite yet.
The workaround is to to launch via the startup script, e.g. /Applications/MATLAB_R2014a.app/bin/matlab
