Mixture of Algebraic and Differential Equations

For example, is there a way to solve a system of 10 unknowns, 8 differential equations, and 2 algebraic equations in MATLAB using ode45 or some other function?

If the math in the algebraic equations is simple enough, then I can solve by hand for 2 unknowns in terms of the other unknowns and have ode45 solve a system of 8 differential equations and 8 unknowns.

If the math is more complicated though, or if I have a larger system, then is not longer feasible though. So is there a way to solve a mixture of algebraic and differential equations using MATLAB?
