Need help to remove poor illumination from picture. (Novice)

I just started using matlab this weekend and I have been trying to manipulate different images. So far I tried to eliminate periodic noise using the fast furior transform and applying a filter but I wasn't that successful.

So, since images are fun to mess around with... lets try something else. I have an image of poor illumination. I don't really know what techniques to use to manipulate different colour spaces. Using matlab what set of functions will help me with the illumination issue?
