How can I convert kdd data set into numeric matrix so that it can be used for intrusion detection system.?

I am using kdd data set with attack for intrusion detection and using som unsupervised training algorithm in matlab. But SOM only takes numeric matrix as input and in kdd some fields are in the form of string. Can anybody tell me how to convert that..?
