Dear Mathworks team,
The new interface is quite frustrating. Switching between panels (always one of MATLAB's strong suits) can't be done without going to separate menus and choosing between different options. Simple taks in previous verions are either not possible or require choosing from long list of options, something not very desirable on a small laptop screen. for example:
  • Don't have freedom in changing the layout other than the prescribed way (e.g. I like to have the editor across the height of the window).
  • Can't maximise the editor by double clicking (1 click to 3)
  • Can't shirnk tabs to fit, now need to click on the little arrow and choose the file from the long list (1 click to 2)
  • lost the little x button in the editor to reduce the number of tiles (1 click to 3)
  • can't preview the contents of mat file without having to choose the file >>right click >> preview. This makes searching for specific variables between multiple files harder (especially if variables have similar names).
This list was compiled after only 2 hours of using the new version (I'm sure more points to come). Unfortunately, I can't keep using 2023a as it was taken off centrally by the employer.

It is irrevocable that Mathworks is committed to the new desktop going forward. I would recommend <What's behind the new desktop> to get a viewpoint from the developer's perspective.
That said, submit complaints, bugs and/or enhancement requests officially at <Product Support Page> in order for there to be any chance at all of them making changes in appearance and/or functionality. Answers isn't an official channel so complaints/suggestions posted here may or may not be seen and it's unlikely would ever get into the enhancement list otherwise.
