In a 3-D surface plot, how can I make the colorbar part of the vertical axis?

I would like to find a way to have a colorbar that always aligns with the numbers on the vertical axis. Also, I want the colorbar to change position, like the vertical axis, as the view is rotated, so it is always on the left side. So, basically, I want to add a colormap to the axis label or the axis numbers.
