Utilizing AT&T Speech API in MATLAB

Hello all,
Pardon my ignorance, I have zero experience with API's. However, I'd love to utilize speech-to-text capabilities in a MATLAB project. One API available is from AT&T: https://developer.att.com/apis/speech/docs. Specifically, I'd like help on utilizing MATLAB to send requests and receive responses for this particular API. Would it be possible to somehow incorporate the java-codekit available for this? I'm not sure how I would go about including the java codekit to be usable in MATLAB and then appropriately formatting the API call. Any guidance or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
