zooming in for roipoly

I want to be able to zoom in before using roipoly. Suggestions?
So far, I implemented the following: Figure; imshow('sumI') I would then zoom into the region of interest then turn the zoom off. I then implement the roipoly command: Mask=roipoly(gcf), my zoomed in figure disappears and I get just a smaller figure that's all gray and I couldn't select anything with the roipoly command.
