failed to draw text string while running in nodisplay mode

The "failed to draw text string" warning occurs while running a matlab script to produce an avi file. I ultimately want to kick off multiple (independent) nightly matlab runs on a linux cluster so I am using matlab -nodisplay -nosplash -r scriptfilename
For test cases during development of the scriptfile I am running with -nodisplay -nosplash on a SunOS. The following is some sample code that briefly illustrates the problem:
hndl=figure;
set(hndl,'visible','off');
aviFileName='test.avi';
mov=avifile(aviFileName,'FPS',10,'COMPRESSION','NONE','Quality',100,'KeyFrame',10);
title('Hello World');
F=im2frame(hardcopy(hndl,-Dzbuffer','-r0'));
mov=addframe(mov,hndl);
mov=close(mov);
I get Warning: Failed to draw text string
The problem is coming from the hardcopy command. The command works properly if I am running matlab with the display on. In both cases I have the figure visibility set to "off".
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I have been working on this for some time. This site is why I am using the hardcopy command, it was already suggested to another user: http://www.mathworks.com/support/solutions/en/data/1-3NMHJ5/?solution=1-3NMHJ5
