Measuring distances from Satelite Images using Matlab

Hello!What is the difference of using Satellite Image to measure distances using Matlab compared to the use of aerial photos.Can the measured distances be the exact measurements from the ground? If not, which corrections to apply when i use Satellite images NOT aerial photos? Pls assist.
