Ideas wanted for a project to do as a second year electrical engineer.

I am a second year student of electrical engineering and we are learning MATLAB based signal processing this semester.

Towards the end of the semester each one of us should do some project on signal processing using MATLAB.

Can anyone please suggest me some interesting topic for the project.

Design a PID controller to control an actuator given a load reading from a load cell. Have the actuator be applying the load to a steel cylinder, geometric and material properties known. The controller should apply the load at a linear ramp, given a slope, and should return to start point if load drops to less than 10% of peak (i.e. the specimen being loaded fails).
