how to open a stack of images (unsupported format) in MATLAB ?

Is it hard to write a script to open a stack of images with unsupported format in MATLAB? I have a stack of images (file.h5) and no idea where to start. Another option. I would be able to read single images in MATLAB and them create a stack of them but the images would need to be realigned (object position is slightly different from image to image). What is easier? Could you please, start me off?

Is the file in HDF5 format? If so then MATLAB can read those; see http://www.mathworks.com/help/matlab/hdf5-files.html
