Reading a text file and saving as a 3x5 array problems?

I'm not sure how to get matlab R2019a to read and save this text file as an array? All the examples people have uploaded and found answers to don't actually seem to print the values for me.

To be more specific, I would like the 5 lines to be displayed;

1.80 352 N Calm

2.70 346 N Light Air

3.60 346 N Light Air

2.70 346 N Light Air

2.70 346 N Light Air

You can get my readfile function from the FEX. If you are using R2017a or later, you can also get it through the AddOn-manager. For R2020b and later you can also use readlines.

Have a read here and here. It will greatly improve your chances of getting an answer.

Ah thank you, I'll write it better next time! I can't quite get the readfile to work, seems a bit odd to have to input code that long as well just to read a few lines from a text file?

What exactly do you mean by not getting it to work?

Also, this function contains a lot of documentation and flexibility. It will work on URLs and local files, for both UTF-8 and ANSI encoding, it will work on GNU Octave, and it will work for any Matlab release newer than 6.5 (which came out two decades ago). It will also work on Window, Ubuntu, and MacOS. It will not just read the file, but also split the lines.

You could just use something like split(fileread(filename),newline) instead if you prefer something shorter. For most files that will do the same. Personally I don't care that this file is almost 1k lines long, nor do I think you should either. Just put the file on your path and the function will work as required. Even easier: use the AddOn-manager to add it, that way you will even get an update notification.

Right, I don't particularly have a problem with long code of course, it's just it doesn't work anyway, I put it in my path and it says;

Error using readfile (line 92)

Incorrect number of input argument.

I'm not sure if I'm just being a moron? Is there nothing I have to alter except putting it in my path?

That error looks like you didn't provide the file name as a variable. What exact line of code did you use?

Which exact line? What do you mean sorry? I just rerouted the readfile.m file to my path - do I have to change every single "filename" in the file to 'datalog.txt'?

It sounds like you would benefit from a basic Matlab tutorial.

filename='datalog.txt';
raw_data=readfile(filename);

Then you can do the parsing of each line.
