Secondary frequency response or automatic generation control by synchronous generators is explained using a two area system consisting of four generators of 900 MVA capacity. M2 is the swing bus. A disturbance is applied at t=10 seconds. The system frequency gets recovered close to 60 Hz due to inherent governor response but the steady state frequency deviation is not equal to zero. In order to make the steady state frequency deviation to zero, the transmission system operator sends commands to the dispatch able plants (here M1 and M2) to provide additional active power to compensate the frequency deviation and thus restore it to nominal value of 60 Hz. PI controller is developed to reflect the AGC
