The intention of the persistent counter functions is to create integer counters that are persistent even if your function is interrupted in any way, or if you want to contine a computation after restarting MATLAB. They are nice when you have large computations within a loop which has to be interrupted.
It can for example be used if you are processing a large number of files, and need to keep track of which files that have been completed, so the job can be continued at a later stage.
