Hydromechanical System Modelling Using Simscape and SimHydraulics
Martin Kirkman and Adam Brooke, Rolls Royce Controls and Data Services
“Fueldraulic” and fuel delivery systems have an integral role in the operation of gas turbine engines such that, if they degrade, misbehave or fail, the safe operation of the engine and aircraft are at risk. For a number of years Rolls Royce Controls and Data Services have used MATLAB® and Simulink® to assess performance and diagnose in-service issues of the hydromechanical hardware using mathematical models.
Historically the development of these models has required the combination of complex mathematical formulae, usually in the form of time-variant, highly non-linear, stiff PDEs. The introduction of the Simscape™ and SimHydraulics® tools has enabled Rolls Royce Controls and Data Services to take their dynamic modelling capability to the next level in both the speed of model development and fidelity of the resulting models. The result of this to date has been a number of successes across the business in tackling high profile challenges that have arisen.
