Get Started with Primary and Secondary School License

R2026b

A Primary and Secondary School license provides faculty and students with access to MATLAB® and Simulink® products. To get users started, install these products in computer labs or on classroom computers and, optionally, enable students to access related online resources.

Transition Existing Installations

Before you begin, if you have existing MATLAB installations that are configured for other licenses, transition those installations to the new license. For each computer that contains installations that use the old license, reactivate the installation with your Primary and Secondary School license by following the instructions in Activate MATLAB Installation Manually.

Install MATLAB

For each personal or school-owned computer on which you want to install MATLAB, follow these steps:

  1. Download the interactive installer from MathWorks Downloads. Run the installer. For additional installation help, see Download and Install MATLAB.

Alternatively, if all computers have the same installation configuration, install by following the instructions in Install Products Noninteractively. After installation, you must still start MATLAB interactively from the computer to begin the activation process. When you use the interactive installer, you do not need to perform this separate activation step.

  2. Optionally, install support packages by using MATLAB Package Manager. See Install Support Packages Noninteractively. If you do not know which support packages your users need, they can install the support packages themselves by using the Add-Ons panel in MATLAB.

(Optional) Enable Students to Access Online Resources

You can optionally enable students to access the following online resources:

  • MATLAB Online™ — Use the latest release of MATLAB from a standard web browser, with computing resources and storage hosted by MathWorks®.

  • Online Training Suite — Take self-paced online courses to learn how to use MATLAB and other MathWorks products.

Students do not have access to these resources by default. As the Primary and Secondary School license administrator, you control which students receive access and which resources they can use, allowing you to meet the security and privacy requirements of your school. For information about how MathWorks addresses security and privacy in MathWorks products, see the MathWorks Trust Center.

To enable students to access these online resources, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the License Center and sign in to your MathWorks Account, using your school email address.

  2. In the license list, click the license to which you want to add students.

    • For MATLAB Online, select the license that has MATLAB in the Label column.

    • For the Online Training Suite, select the license that has Online Training Suite in the Label column.

  3. On the Manage Users tab, click Add/Remove Users to either add a single student, or add a list of students by using a comma-separated values (CSV) file. The License Center provides a template CSV file that you can use to enter student information, such as their school email addresses.

  4. Optionally, select the option to notify students that you added them to the license. The system does not notify them automatically.

  5. Click Done.

Students can now use the online resources to which you granted them access. To get students started, have them go to matlab.mathworks.com and sign in to their MathWorks Account using their school email address. Students who do not already have a MathWorks Account are prompted to create one. Students who have access can then click Open MATLAB Online or Online Training to use these resources.

Manage Existing MATLAB Installations

  • To install the latest updates for existing installations of MATLAB, deploy the offline update package to each installation. See Update MATLAB on Offline Computer.

  • To uninstall previous releases of MATLAB from a computer, see Uninstall MATLAB.

  • To install the latest release of MATLAB so that users can access new features or products, see Get New MATLAB Release.
