Transition Existing Installations to Academic Teaching Licenses

R2026b

Follow the instructions below to transition MATLAB® product installations configured for Individual, Designated Computer, Concurrent, or Network Named User licenses to use the Academic Teaching License or Community and Technical College License.

To transition existing MATLAB installations, you can either reinstall MATLAB on each machine or update MATLAB without reinstalling.

Reinstall MATLAB

The simplest way to transition an existing installation to the new license is to uninstall and then reinstall MATLAB.

  • To reinstall MATLAB on multiple computers that have the same installation configuration, complete these steps:

    1. Uninstall all releases of MATLAB that are linked to existing licenses. See Uninstall MATLAB.

    2. If you are transitioning Concurrent or Network Named User licenses, uninstall the network license manager. See Uninstall Network License Manager.

    3. Install the latest release of MATLAB on each computer, using a silent, command-line installer. Follow the instructions in Install Products Noninteractively.

  • To uninstall and reinstall each MATLAB installation manually, complete these steps on each computer:

    1. Uninstall MATLAB from the computer. See Uninstall MATLAB.

    2. From MathWorks Downloads, download and install the latest release of MATLAB. For more details, see Download and Install MATLAB.

Update MATLAB Without Reinstalling

To transition existing MATLAB installations to the new license without reinstalling MATLAB, complete the following steps:

  1. Delete existing license files from computers in your organization. To find the license file locations, see Locate Your License File.

  2. Replace the deleted license files with a file that contains the information that the new license requires.

    1. Create a file named license_info.xml.

    2. Copy the information below into the license_info.xml file, exactly as shown.

      license_info.xml
      <root>
        <ActivationEntry hostname="*" matlabroot="*" user="*">
          <licmode>onlinelicensing</licmode>
        </ActivationEntry>
      </root>

    3. Save this file in the matlabroot/licenses folder of each installed MATLAB release.

  3. If you are transitioning from Concurrent or Network Named User licenses, uninstall the network license manager from the license server. See Uninstall Network License Manager. If any client computers have an environment variable set to an old license server, unset that environment variable.

  4. Start MATLAB and verify that the sign-in prompt opens. If the sign-in prompt does not open, then the installation might still point to an old license. Confirm that you removed all old license files and repeat this procedure, if necessary.
