How to Import Matlab Figures?

I would like to bring a *.fig into a script and perhaps do some additional things to it, as in adding a text statement. I have saved graphs as sampleName.fig and tried to use

import sampleName.fig

to get it on the screen to no avail. Could someone tell me what I am doing wrong? Thank you.
