When I open a figure in Matlab the toolbar is not displayed. So if I enter
>> figure
I get the same result as if I entered
>> figure('Toolbar','none')
How do I change the default behavior?? Thanks.

I think what you want is this:
set(0,'defaultfiguretoolbar','figure');
To see the list of options, use:
set(gcf,'toolbar')

Put the command in your startup.m file. just type:
edit startup
This is the file MATLAB runs every time it starts.

Also, see Loren's blog on the startup.m file. Go to BLOGS at the top of the page, click on Loren's blog and search for startup.

I'm not sure if you're asking how to not display the toolbar by default, or asking why your figure does not display the toolbar (and how to fix the default).
To change default properties for a figure toolbar, you can do the following:
set(0, 'defaultFigureToolbar', 'none')
To remove the default setting,
set(0, 'defaultFigureToolbar', 'remove')

Check if you have in your matlabrc.m or (if it exists) in the startup.m:
set(0,'defaultfiguretoolbar','none')
if is there, then comment it out.
