It is definitely impossible to guide you, if you do not define your goal with any details. We cannot know, if your project will take a week or if you are talking about a PhD. It is even not getting clear, if you want to use MATLAB and or or SIMULINK.
Finally I have to claim, that you cannot solve real life problems with MATLAB. All you can do is solving the simulation of real life problems, and this is substantially different. Imagine you want to find the walking pattern of a human: Although you can find the energy-minimizing motion of a rigid body system, no real human will move in exactly the same way, because the real motion considers the friction between floor and foot, further optimization criteria as stability of the head, if the person is in a hurry, hungry, tired or angry.
So please edit your question and add the necessary details.

I have to disagree. MATLAB can make a perfectly accurate simulation of the real life situation, "If I whistle, will my dog come back?" No matter how many simulation factors you care to add (distance, volume of whistle, pitch, temperature, humidity along the path, reflections off of water, sound conduction through metal, time of day, number of rabbits in the area, etc.) the calculation can be made completely accurate to as many (finite) digits of precision that be accommodated by the equipment, by simply outputting "NO".
I know this to be the completely accurate answer, as I do not have and have never had a dog. ;-)

@Walter: Yup, e-x-a-c-t-l-y. Simulating a *no* dog is *no* real life. But if you send me your psotal address, I will send you a cute dog for a fail-safe proof.

I suggest that you work on an interactive routine that guides people through the creation of a good well-formatted "MATLAB Answers" Question, ensuring that they include all the relevant detail, with pattern matching against the FAQs and against previous Questions in order to suggest areas for them to explore and possible solutions before the Question is finally submitted.

+1: Walter, I have the strange impression that MATLAB Answers is not really the real lyf. I think Matt is at the real life currently. Let's ask him, if he's back.
I voted for this answer, because it would save some of my time I spend here, such that I will have more time for real life!
