Matlab very slow at initialization and execution. Why?

Hi,
I recently upgraded my matlab version to 2013a from 2011. I had a network license earlier and now a license key. I have a mac (Mavericks - 10.9.4) and uninstalled 2011 before I installed 2013a. But every since its installation, matlab has become extremely slow. It takes a really long time for initialization (approx 5 mins after opening the window) and then a very long time every time I run simple commands (like print a 2x2 matrix that I just defined). I also upgraded to JAVA (jdk and jre) to 1.7 version.
Thanks, PH

Why/how did you "upgrade" to an old version, more than a year old? The Mathworks let you do that - buy an obsolete version? I'd call them since it seems like an installation problem, and I believe you get a year of support with the purchase of a "new" license.
I actually did update to the latest version (2014a) but the matlab screen and all commands appear blurry on my mac. It seems that this is a well known problem on mac and version before 2013a do not have this problem. So, I reverted from 2014a to 2013a.
Thanks for this link. I now downloaded Matlab 2014a and your link helped me get rid of the blurriness issue on a mac.
But my concern on the initialization is not addressed. It takes more than 5 mins even with the 2014a on my mavericks OS to initialize or execute a command.
