Same font setting but the look is very different in editor of Matlab 2013 and Matlab 2014. Why?

This question is still relevant. I observed the same thing between R2015a and R2017a.

I ran into a similar problem and the following fixed my issue. The font settings can be found in Preferences --> MATLAB --> Fonts. Here you'll find a setting for "Desktop code font". Usually, the font in your editor is determined by the settings of this block. In my case, however, the Editor's font had been overridden by strange font settings in the Preferences --> MATLAB --> Fonts --> Custom block. Editing this block fixed the problem for me.
