Real time reading in a file

Hello. I want to write a function which continually reads in a file until some stopping criteria is met. I would like it to read this file in every, say, 500 ms. It seems like a simple question, and I think I could use the "timer" to do it, but the examples aren't very illustrative and I'm not sure where to start. Any help getting started would be greatly appreciated.
