Will running MATLAB from an external hard drive work?

I use a Macbook Air 2018 8gb Ram, and Intel Chip. I am planning on purchasing an external hard drive since the storage space is limited. With this in mind, the full question is will running MATLAB and its' toolboxes from an external hard drive work?

Another possible concern would be MATLAB's licensing.

In my experience Matlab will run fine on removable media. If boot times are important to you, make sure you get a fast drive and a fast connection to your computer (so not USB 2).
