I can't run Activate (Mac OS X 10.10) to reactivate expired MATLAB license

I can't run the license activation application (Activate from MATLAB.app -> show package contents). My computer (Mac OS X 10.10) simply 'does nothing' when I try to run either MATLAB or Activate. The license expired a few days ago. Its an academic license that can be renewed using the activator through the internet. How do I reactivate MATLAB (R2014b)?
