If you are using a quite recent version of MATLAB (latest two releases, three at most), then:
Select the HOME tab in the tool ribbon. From there select Add-Ons -> Explore Add-Ons. In the page that comes up, search for Mapping. In the results, select Mapping Toolbox.
On the page that results, possibly the right-most button near the top right will say "Manage". If so, then you already have the Mapping Toolbox installed. If it is installed, but is not working, then first test to see whether you have a license for the toolbox:
license('test', 'MAP_Toolbox')
ans = 1
If the answer is 0, then you are in the odd situation of having the Mapping Toolbox installed but not licensed and that the Add-Ons manager did not detect that you are not licensed. In this combination of circumstances, you will probably need to ask Mathworks Support for assistance.
If you got "Manage" and the license test said 1, but Mapping Toolbox is not working, then try the experiment,
restoredefaultpath; rehash toolboxcache
if the Mapping Toolbox starts working then you had a path problem. At this point you might want to quit MATLAB and re-enter it and start debugging the path problem by exploring with pathtool . After you are happy with your revised MATLAB path, use savepath
If the right-most button instead says, "This add-on is not supported on your platform", then that would be very odd for the Mapping Toolbox, and will need the assistance of Mathworks Support. (There are other toolboxes such as SoC Blockset that are legitimately not supported on all operating systems.)
If the right-most buttons instead are "Buy" and "Get Trial", then you need to press one of those two to get access to Mapping Toolbox
If you are not using a quite recent version of MATLAB, then there are three possibilities:
  • You might be using a version of MATLAB sufficiently old that it did not offer Add-On support at all. More about that in a moment.
  • You might be using a version of MATLAB for which Add-On support is no longer available. The way to proceed for this case is the same as for the above
  • You might be using a version of MATLAB new enough that Add-On support is available. In this case, possibly you might still see the Buy and Get Trial links. It is not immediately clear what those links mean if you are using older software releases. If you are using a MATLAB release more than two releases ago, you are apparently no longer able to purchase toolboxes for the release directly, and instead need to update your license to the most recent MATLAB version and purchase against that version... after which you can go back to the older release and use the new toolbox license.
If you are using a version of MATLAB old enough that going through the Add-On browser is no longer feasible, then you need to do the license test (as described above) to see whether you are licensed for Mapping Toolbox. If you are licensed, then you would need to download the MATLAB Installer version for your release, and use the installer to install Mapping Toolbox. If you are not licensed for Mapping Toolbox, and you are using a MATLAB release more than a year old, then you will need to update your MATLAB license to the newest release, and purchase Mapping Toolbox against that new release. After that, either use the newly purchased release or else go back to your existing MATLAB installation and use the installer to install Mapping Toolbox, giving the license number of your new MATLAB release. You can using a toolbox license with any older version of MATLAB.
