Symbolic toolbox differentiation by chain rule without expression defined

Hello,
let's say I have variables x and y that depend on time. .
I have a third variable z which is a function of x and y only. .
Here, I do not have any expression that explicitly defines z, but I just know that it is a function of only x and y.
Then, I want to come up with an expression for .
I am expecting to see something like
I thought the code below would do this:
syms x(t) y(t) z(x,y)
diff(z,t)
ans(x, y) =
0
but it is just outputing zero.
Is there a workaround or proper way to do this ?
Thanks

syms x(t) y(t) z(x,y) t
x = x(t);
y = y(t);
z = z(x,y)
z =
C = diff(z,t)
C =
