Editor compare fails in Linux: Failed to build default Lightweight Browser

Running MATLAB 2019b on a linux host, using VcXSrv on a Windows 11 virtual machine, I can do routine MATLAB work, using software opengl for graphics.
If I try using the "Compare" feature in the editor window, I get a dialog box with the error: "Failed to build default Lighweight Browser" followed by another window with nothing in it. Can anyone offer advice about where to look for a solution to this?
I can generate routine plots on the screen (plus the command and editor windows work fine).
I can use the doc command to pull up help, though if I feed the doc command a nonexistent feature, I get a scroll of Java errors:
Exception in thread "AWT-EventQueue-0": java.Lang.NullPointerException
I don't really care about the java error when I try to use doc on a nonexistent feature, I'm just offering the example as possibly relevant information. My real question is about the error with the Compare button in the editor.
