How can I decrease the font size in Matlab windows
Show older comments
I want to test my output in the Command window. To display more computations and check them, I need more lines and a smaller font size of the displayed numerbs in the Command window.

Answer from AI:
To decrease the font size and maximize the number of lines visible in your MATLAB Command Window, you can adjust your global environment preferences. [1]
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Open Preferences:
- On the Home tab, in the Environment section, click on Preferences (represented by a gear icon). [1, 2]
2. Navigate to Fonts:
- In the left pane of the Preferences dialog box, expand the MATLAB node if necessary, and select Appearance > Fonts. [1]
3. Change the Font Size:
- In the Desktop code font section (which specifically controls the Command Window, Editor, and Live Editor), locate the Size dropdown menu.
- Select a smaller number (e.g., change from the default 12 down to 9 or 10). [1, 2, 3]
4. Apply Changes:
- Click Apply, and then click OK. Your Command Window text will immediately scale down, allowing more computation lines to fit on your screen. [1]
Pro-Tip: Fit Even More Data on Your Screen
Since your goal is to test and check as many computations as possible, you can also change how MATLAB formats the spacing between your lines:
- Use Compact Spacing: By default, MATLAB adds empty lines between outputs. You can force it to squeeze lines closer together by typing the following command directly into the Command Window and pressing Enter:
matlab
format compact
- Revert Spacing (Optional): If you ever want to switch back to the loose, spaced-out layout later, use: [1]
matlab
format loose
Using a smaller font size combined with format compact will significantly maximize the amount of data you can review at a single glance.

Alternately, if you want programmatic control over the font size you can use the settings object to change the font size.
s = settings;
The font size for the Command Window is stored as:
s.matlab.fonts.codefont.Size
To change it set the "Temporary" value (which will overwrite the "Factory" value). I'll make it a bit larger, but you could make it smaller.
s.matlab.fonts.codefont.Size.TemporaryValue = 16;
To reset the size, clear that Temporary value.
s.matlab.fonts.codefont.Size.clearTemporaryValue
