It seems like I'm gonna answer this by myself. The answer is that the updating function is unfortunately only supported by SimMechanics first generation. I found this out by chance when watching another webinar video. It would be nice if this is mentioned more obviously in the documentation.

Hello, I found this useful Tutorial on how to Import and merge CAD models into Simmechanics. My problem is that there is no "Retain connectivity to imported blocks" in the right click menu which I could select.

You're right, except as of R2016a, there is a way to update an imported model with the new 2G blocks.
The difference is that CAD models are now imported with a MATLAB file that stores all the parameters, so you can re-import that parameters file without touching the model (assuming your CAD model did not change structurally, that is).
