I purchased a Surface Pro 4, I7, 16GB ram, specifically to run MatLab, as that is what I do most of my work on. The problem was not with the system requirements - MatLab will run as expected. The problem was that the Surface Pro 4 quickly overheated. It got so hot in fact, that it shut off. This happened every time I tried to do some serious number crunching.
The happy ending to this story is I returned the SP4 to my local Microsoft store for a full refund, no questions asked. I was ready to tell them all about the overheating issue but they didn't even care. I'll wait a while longer to see if the coming Surface Pro 5 has addressed this issue.

Thanks, that is useful information.
I used to run SETI@HOME and similar tasks on my MacBook Pro (2012) including some running on the GPU. It never shut down but it did run hot, and it probably lead to the premature demise of the battery (fortunately I got it fixed just before the warranty expired.) Before doing anything like that again, I will make sure that I have a working cooling system.

Okay, Doc Shutters.. Wondering what laptop did you purchase after returning your Surface pro, to fulfil your requirement?
