Matlab editor: Open a script in a new tab ?

When I try to open a script from the editor, it automatically closes the script that was open. It is impossible to open several scripts in different tabs of the editor. What is the solution ?
I use Matlab R2015b (64 bit MATLAB on Windows). To open a new script, from the editor, I just click on the "open" button. It is not a new installation. I have this problem since a kind of Matlab bug (the script which was open, with no reason, has been deleted).

@John: I could open multiple tabs in Matlab 5.3, R11 in 1999. So it must be a really very old version.

Try to reset Matlab's preferences: Open prefdir in the file browser of the operating system, e.g. the Windows Explorer, then change to MathWorks\MATLAB\R2015b\. Now rename the file "MATLAB_Editor_State.xml" and restart Matlab. If this does not help, try "matlab.settings" or "matlab.prf". Sorry, this is pure guessing. It would be better to restore this folder from your backup to the state before the crash. Do not delete the files, because perhaps Matlab does not start anymore without them.
You do have a backup, don't you?

Are you working on Windows? Did you try to restore the "previous version" of the folder in the explorer?
If nothing helps reinstall Matlab.
