segmentation by combining edge detection & region growing is it an efficient method?

I'm a student. currently I'm doing my UG project in medical image processing i.e detection of brain tumor. For this i have to filter the gray scale image using liner spatial filtering after that segmentation is done which is the combination of edge detection and region growing. Please help me to segment the image using the combination of region growing and detection. Also suggest me which edge detector is efficient to segment the image.
