How do I get the MATLAB Runtime to work in 2017a?

I recently downloaded the MATLAB Runtime compiler and I am unable to make it work. Is the compiler included with the 2017a release (academic)? I am using Matlab 2017a running on Mac OS X 10.10 (Yosemite).

MCR is not the runtime compiler: it is compiler runtime. That is, it is a library called upon by programs that have been compiled by the MATLAB Compiler, or the MATLAB Compiler SDK products. Those two products are additional cost.
In some cases, institutions arrange site licences; the products included with the site license are negotiated case by case, but you could inquire with your IT people.
