How to prevent MACOS to open a new instance each time I click to a *.m file ?

Hello everyone,
since a few days (probably since an OS update), each time I click on a *.m file in my finder, it opens a new instance of matlab. It is very annoying!
I use matlab 2014b but a colleague of mine has the same problem with 2016b. MacOS is an up-to-date macOS high sierra.
is there anything I can do to go back to the previous behaviour ?
thanks for your help,
Pierre

my problem disappeared by itself after a reboot. Maybe it was due to some update of the system but I am not sure if there were an update or not. I did not change anything with matlab.
