App designer table update crash

I have an App Designer app that has a handful of UITable components that are periodically updated automatically. Sometimes, seemingly at random, the circular "thinking" icon appears on the table and the entire app stops responding, without producing any errors. Has anyone else seen this behavior? How do I go about debugging a problem that produces no errors?

I have exactly the same Problem with r2017b.
So far the it seems that it occurs randomly. I can load the same data twice and once it works.
In general I have noticed that the UI tables update very slowly. I can only imagine this is the issue.
Edit: I found this post. It seems the table performance is a known issue. One can only hope that future Matlab versions make it better.
