I am pursuing my masters degree in Computer science and engineering. I would like to know some challenges faced in image processing using matlab. This would help me to find my project topic which could be done with the help of MATLAB.
So, what are the recent challenges in image processing field.

  1. Medical Image Processing (Medical Image Analysis Algorithms)- Still Miles to go
  2. Computer Vision with more accuracy
  3. Machine Learning with Higher Intelligence
  4. Adaptive Intelligence (Sub Class of Machine learning)

There is still ongoing research in virtually everything. You might be able to get a sense of what's hot by checking out conference topics of conferences currently being held: http://conferences.visionbib.com/Iris-Conferences.html
In addition, you can check out papers being published in image processing: http://www.visionbib.com/bibliography/contents.html
To me, it seems like the subject that is growing the fastest is deep learning (CNN, RNN, LSTM, etc.). For example at the Electronic Imaging meeting this year Professor Ed Delp (Purdue University) said that with his 15 graduate students, every one had deep learning as at least part of the project. It wasn't like that 15 years ago. He said that if you're doing a project these days and you're not using deep learning, people are going to ask "Why not"?
