How to pass dynamic variables from Simulink to a C++ executable?

Hi I am quite new to Matlab and would like to use a dynamic Simulink variable in a C++ code which will be executed in an exe. I tried to use the Matlab Data API but with no luck. How can I access variables from Matlab using C++?
