Can someone suggest how to efficiently model a non-linear quantizer in MATLAB code?

A linear quantizer can be efficiently modeled with the MATLAB round function. But a non-linear quantizer has irregular transitions and therefore cannot be modeled with the round function.
[Merged information from duplicate question]
QUANTIZ() is a search based quantizer and therefore has slow performance. Is there another MATLAB function or modeling technique known to the MATLAB community that has faster performance?
When I model RF systems and stream large quantities of input sample data, overall system performance is slow when quantizing with quantiz() . I faster quantizer function would increase productivity.
Thanks.

It never occured to me to use round before reading this post. I just wanted to say thank you for this idea to use "round". For uniform quantization, it is so much faster than quantiz!

histc() perhaps.
Anything beyond that would probably depend upon the characteristics of the breakpoints, and would probably start to depend upon MATLAB implementation characteristics.
