How do I enable Java?

Hello,
I'm not sure if this is a Matlab problem or a Windows problem (or a me problem)! I'm trying to run Matlab 2011b on a Windows 7 64 bit machine. I get the error described in this page: http://www.mathworks.com/support/solutions/en/data/1-9VQS9L/index.html?product=ML&solution=1-9VQS9L , thus java is not enabled.
I have attempted the solution in this page: http://www.mathworks.com/support/solutions/en/data/1-1812J/
Unfortunately the solution is not working. I created the MATLAB_JAVA variable in Windows to where the rt.jar file is. I still get the same error message, and it looks like the MATLAB_JAVA variable that I created isn't "sticking", and it refers back to a different directory that does not exist. I've updated Java on this computer to the latest version.
Does anyone know how to solve this?
Thank you!

Ok, I updated the Java to the correct (?) 64 bit version, which eliminated the warning first mentioned above. Now I get the message "Warning: Unable to load Java Runtime Environment. The specified module could not be found." Where do I go from here?

From this related posting, it looks like you might need to download and install msvcr71.dll in Windows/System.

Thank you for the suggestion. The msvcr71.dll file is in the Windows/System folder, but I'm still getting the same warning.
