In which way the inbuilt function det does not suit you, that you want to write your own code?

Are you looking for own code, not inbuilt (Which is not mentioned in the question)?

Maybe you just need to assign it to an output:
result = det(yourMatrix);
That is perfectly valid code, assuming you have a matrix called "yourMatrix". If you don't then simply use your variable's name instead.
If that is no good, say why not. Perhaps something like "My homework is to write a determinant-finding function, but I'd like you to do it so I can turn in your work as my own."
