Error caused by having accessibility keyboard enabled. Can solve by unchecking box under System Preferences --> Accessibility --> Keyboard --> Accessibility Keyboard
I don't NEED the accessibility keyboard enabled but some people do, please fix bug. I'm running macOS Catalina 10.15.7 and the error was present on both MATLAB 2020b and 2021a.
