Why do I receive the following error?

License Manager Error -10 indicates that one or more of your products has expired in your license file. It does not necessarily mean that your license in general has expired.

 

How can I tell if my license, in general, has expired?

If you are unsure if your license in general has expired, view your licenses in the License Center on MathWorks.com. You can tell if your product has expired if its Term is Annual and the Service End Date is past today's date or if it is a Trial license and the End Date is past today's date. If your product's Term is Perpetual, then your product does not expire.

In some cases there is confusion between the license itself expiring, compared to Software Maintenence Service (SMS) expiring. SMS is the right to use new releases, and the right to use some online software, and (for some kinds of account) the right to make technical support calls. When SMS expires, the right to use MATLAB itself is not affected. Many licenses are "perpetual" -- you can use them indefinitely... you just do not get access to new versions if you do not pay SMS.

That said, some licenses do expire:

• Home licenses: always perpetual
• Student licenses: mathworks used to sell 8 month or 1 year licenses through campus bookstores, but I have not heard of that for a number of years and I do not know if that is still offered. The Student licenses purchased through the online store are Perpetual, but can only be used while the student is enrolled in an appropriate educational institution.
• MOOC (Massive Open Online Courses): Always Term licenses. The people running the MOOC are responsible for providing updated licenses if there is an extension.
• Standard (commercial / professional) licenses can be either Term or Perpetual. It is more common for Individual licenses to be Perpetual, but they could be Term. It is more common for places that have Term licenses to use Network license servers.
• Educational licenses: when purchased by individuals or small departments, it is more common for the licenses to be Perpetual. Total Academic Headcount licenses (the kind of license that permits students to use university licences to access MATLAB) are, if I understand correctly, always Term licences. There is, though, a twist, that any one licenses assigned under a TAH master license might be required to renew access even though the overall license has not expired, as TAH are charged according to the estimated number of users, so universities have reason to check that people who were using a license still need the license.

If you have an Individual license directly from Mathworks, or you are faculty or student using a TAH educational license, then to renew your license file (after all appropriate fees have been paid), then in your command window go to the top right, RESOURCES -> Help -> Licensing -> Update current licenses

If you are an end-user using a network license server at a university or business, then you would not typically have to update your licenses; but if it ever turns out to be necessary, you would do that same Update current licenses .

If you are IT staff managing a network license server, then you would pay appropriate fees to Mathworks who would send you an updated license file, which you would merge into your existing network license file. On Unix type systems, you would then typically send a SIGHUP to the license manager daemon to get it to re-read the license file without terminating any existing sessions. I do not recall at the moment if there is a lmgrd command to tell the daemon to reread the file.

If you have been using a trial license, it is best to delete (or rename) the trial license file, to prevent it from interfering with the real license. Information about your real license should have been sent to you when you made your purchase.

I find hints that you are staff at a university? If so then you would probably be using an educational license. But that leaves open the question of whether you are using an individual license or if you are getting your license served by a license manager run by your department (or by the IT department) .

If you are using an individual license, then whoever's budget it is would contact Mathworks Sales to renew the license. Once that was done and Mathworks had updated the licenses online, you would use Help -> Licensing -> Update Current License

I see on some other sites that -1,212 is most often associated with the license server being unable to read the license file because the filesystem permissions have been set in a way that permission to access the license file is denied.

If I were to give you a license, then Mathworks would cancel my license.

As best I understand those time-limited student licenses were only available through Campus bookstores. I think it has been at least 5 years since I last heard of one being sold.

If you purchased MATLAB yourself, then it is unlikely that the license has expired -- but your Software Maintenence Service might have expired. SMS for Student licenses is the right to update to newer versions, and is different from the right to run the version you already have.

If you are using MATLAB installed locally, then look in the main MATLAB installation directory for a deactivation exe . Run that to remove the license, and then run the activation exe in the same directory to activate against the trial license.

In theory you could just run the activation instead of deactivating first, but MATLAB will not remove the old license file in that situation, as it is common for people to get trial licenses for individual toolboxes while still using the original license.

Universities that issue licenses to students have the ability to make the license be for a limited time, after which the student may have to go through some kind of internal renewal process. In some cases the student needs to fill out an online form specific to the university; in other cases the IT people are given lists of students who have enrolled in courses that use MATLAB and set the termination date based upon the most recent information they have.

It is possible that you might already have been granted a renewal through internal processes. To find out, use the command window Help -> Licensing -> Update current licenses... to load in the latest license associated with your account.

It is quite uncommon that personal licenses expire -- most personal licenses are purchased as perpetual licenses. Software Support might expire for perpetual licenses, but not the license itself.

It is possible, though, since MATLAB will sell term Standard (commercial / professional) licenses to individuals. Term standard licenses are typically only purchased by businesses and academic institutions.

Anyhow, if your license has already expired and it has been renewed with Mathworks, then change directory (in your file explorer) to the directory that MATLAB is installed in, and you should see an activation executable there.

If your license is about to expire but has not expired yet (so you can still run MATLAB) and it has been renewed with Mathworks, then use the command window Help -> Licensing -> Update licenses... to update the license file.
