Using MATLAB, Olea Sensor Networks developed unique machine learning algorithms to optimize sensor performance monitoring for tasks like checking the vital signs of humans and animals without any contact to the body.
When we first started this project it had these big antennas, a lot of electronics, and we ended up having to shrink this down to smaller than a credit card size. Traditional radar designs-- throw it out the windows. So what we have done with this device, then, if nothing else, is to provide a means to be able to record data over long periods of time noninvasively, noncontact-- doesn't touch the skin-- can see through clothing, can see through body armor, and it's safe.
We had to run a number of models to validate our assumptions. And we used MATLAB to develop these mathematical models in order to reflect what we were doing in this close proximity. Imagine looking at an EKG, and our model was able to forecast where that beat was going to be and what kind of beat that was going to be based on historical data.
This is the result of the data that we collect from just putting this, for example, in the shirt pocket. We were able to extract that with all the hard work we did with our modeling, but this is a medical grade quality signal that can be used for actual diagnosis. We literally launched a brand new product in six months. Never could have happened without us using these tools.
